The thin, sheet-like material that makes up the skeleton in graptolites (Graptolithina). Long thought to be chitin, it is now considered perhaps to be collagen (a scleroprotein). It is bi-layered, with an inner fusellar layer and outer cortical layer which have distinct structural differences.
