A lunar eclipse during which the Moon passes slightly to the north or south of the umbra, and only through the less intense outer region (the penumbra) of the Earth’s shadow, usually showing only negligible dimming. When the Earth’s atmosphere is heavily laden with dust (following volcanic eruptions, for example), the penumbra may be darker than normal.
