单词 Penrose process
释义
Penrose process

Physics
  • A process by which the rotational energy of a rotating black hole can be extracted. An object close to the event horizon may split into two particles. One, with negative energy, falls into the black hole, causing the rotation rate to decrease. The other, with positive rotation, moves away. The result is that energy is extracted at the expense of rotational energy of the black hole. This process was suggested by Roger Penrose in 1969. See also Blandford–Znajek process.

Astronomy
  • A process for extracting energy from a rotating black hole (i.e. a Kerr black hole). The process requires sending a mass into a trajectory in the ergosphere around the black hole, against the direction of rotation of the black hole. While inside the ergosphere the mass splits into two parts, one of which enters the black hole while the other escapes. Given a suitable trajectory, the emerging fragment may possess a total energy (i.e. rest mass plus kinetic energy) greater than the total energy of the mass that went in. The extra energy has been extracted from the rotational energy of the black hole, which must therefore slow down slightly. The process is named after the English mathematician Roger Penrose (1931– ), who discovered it in 1969.
