A US Congressional Act that established NASA as a replacement for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The final version of the Act was greatly influenced by the Senate's special committee on space and astronautics, chaired by the Senate's majority leader, Lyndon B. Johnson. US president Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Act into law on 29 July 1958. It did not divide responsibilities between NASA and the US military, but Eisenhower's intention was for NASA to manage the crewed space programme.
