A protective covering put over a payload on the top of a rocket for the launch. The covering is designed to be jettisoned when it has risen above the atmosphere. An aluminium-lithium payload fairing that weighed 518 kg was used for the April 1999 launch of the IKONOS 1 satellite, but it did not separate and the mission failed.
