At the start of his career de Gennes was concerned with superconductivity and with the magnetic properties of matter. He subsequently turned his attention to liquid crystals , polymers, and other types of soft matter. De Gennes was awarded the 1991 Nobel Prize for physics for his contributions to the theory of liquid crystals and polymers.
