The release of an artificial satellite or other object into space. Early satellites were deployed directly from rockets. The space shuttle releases satellites, often several on one flight, from its cargo bay after manoeuvring into a deployment attitude. This is based on the attitude of the shuttle and the destined orbit and orientation of the satellite. The shuttle releases a satellite destined for a higher geosynchronous orbit by spinning it on a revolving table before coiled springs project it into space. Other satellites may be deployed simply by an astronaut's gentle push.
