A condition that arises when an atomic or molecular system with a number of possible quantized states (see quantum theory) has two or more distinct states of the same energy. The number of degenerate states each possessing that energy level is the statistical weight. Certain semiconductors, for example, exhibit degeneracy in either the valence or conduction bands, in which holes or electrons of the same energy level have different effective masses.
