A US government department presided over by the Secretary of Defense, with headquarters in the Pentagon. It approved early military launches of the Atlas rockets which were later adapted for use by NASA. Early astronauts were normally military pilots, and the DOD loaned NASA hundreds of officers for the Apollo project. Some space shuttle flights have been made for the DOD, with the details kept secret.
