The national observatory of France, founded in 1667, and the first national observatory of any country. G. D. Cassini was its first head. In 1926 it took over Meudon Observatory, 9 km to the south of Paris, founded in 1876 for solar studies. Paris Observatory also operates the Nançay Radio Astronomy Observatory.
