The irreversible chemical decomposition or transformation due to temperature, and without the reaction with oxygen. It is used to produce coke from coal for use in making steel using temperatures of up to 2,000^ºC. Coke can also be made by pyrolysis using other hydrocarbon substances in petroleum refining.
