A microwave amplifier in which the reactance of the device is varied with respect to time in a regular manner, i.e. it is pumped. An alternating voltage, the pump voltage, is the most common form of pump. Provided that a suitable relationship is maintained between the pump frequency and the signal frequency, energy is transferred from the pump and amplification of the signal is achieved.
