A highly toxic, nonmetallic element in group VI, symbol Se, atomic number 34; steel-gray color; soluble in carbon disulfide, insoluble in water and alcohol; melts at 217°C; and boils at 690°C; used in analytical chemistry, metallurgy, and photoelectric cells, and as a lube-oil stabilizer and chemicals intermediate.
