code set Also known as coding scheme. A set of binary codes used by a computer system to create, store, and exchange information. A code set establishes a specific combination of 1s and 0s of a specific total length in order to represent a character, such as a letter, number, punctuation mark, or control character (e.g., carriage return, line feed, space, blank, and delete). Contemporary standard coding schemes include Baudot, ASCII, EBCDIC, and Unicode. See also ASCII, Baudot code, EBCDIC, and Unicode. |
