Cat 5e (Category 5 enhanced)

A type of cabling that is specified in ANSI/ICEA S-91-661,

SI/EIA/TIA 568, and ISO/IEC 11801. Originally developed as a performance-enhanced version of Cat 5

in support of 10/100Base-T Ethernet LANs, Cat 5e quickly became, and remains, preferred for all inside wire and cable applications. Cat 5e performance is achieved through a tighter twist of 3–4 twists per inch, electrical balancing between the pairs, and fewer cable anomalies, such as inconsistencies in both conductor diameter and thickness of the dielectric insulation. Cat 5e typically runs over 24 AWG unshielded twisted pair (UTP), and is rated at 100 MHz over distances up to 350 meters. Cat 5e also may be shielded twisted pair (STP). Some manufacturers have increased the signaling speed up to 250 MHz in support of 1000Base-T, although over shorter distances of 100 meters or so. In ISO/IEC 11801 terms, Cat 5e falls into Class D (≤ 100 MHz). See also 10/100BaseT, 1000Base-T, AWG, Ethernet, LAN, STP, and UTP.
