Cat 5 (Category 5) A type of cabling that is specified in ANSI/ICEA S-91-661, ANSI/EIA/TIA 568, and ISO/IEC 11801. Originally developed in support of 10/100Base-T Ethernet LANs, Cat 5 quickly became preferred for all inside wire and cable applications. Cat 5 runs over 24 AWG unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and is rated at 100 MHz. In ISO/IEC 11801 terms, Cat 5 falls into Class D (≤ 100 MHz). See also 10/100Base-T, AWG, Ethernet, LAN, and UTP. |
