Cat 3 (Category 3) A type of cabling that is specified in ANSI/ICEA S-91-661, ANSI/ICEA S-101- 699-2001, ANSI/EIA/TIA 568, and ISO/IEC 11801. Originally developed in support of 10Base-T Ethernet LANs, Cat 3 is commonly used in telco local loops in support of POTS, ISDN, and T1 and E-1 services. Cat 3 runs over 24 AWG unshielded twisted pair (UTP), with 3–4 twists per foot, and is rated at 16 MHz. In ISO/IEC 11801 terms, Cat 3 falls into Class C (≤ 16 MHz).
