单词 | Carty, John Joseph (1861–1932) |
释义 | Carty, John Joseph (1861–1932) As a young American Bell technician and one of the original tele- phone operators (1879), Mr. Carty suggested in 1881 the use of a second copper wire to complete the telephone circuit and, thereby, to avoid the emanation of electrical noise from the ground. Previously, copper telephone circuits were provisioned over a single wire. Carty later introduced the concept of a phantom circuit, through which two telephone lines can operate in tandem to support three simultaneous conversations. He was the first to install loading coils on a circuit (circa 1900) and was involved in the engineering of the first transcontinental telephone circuit. Carty became AT&T chief engineer in 1907, vice president in charge of the Department of Development and Research in 1919, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1923. See also loading coil, phantom circuit, and twisted pair. |
