binary notation (binary) 1. A system with only two possible states, such as on or off, positive (+) or negative (–), or true or false. A simple light switch, for example, is in either the on position or the off position. 2. The base-2 numbering system. A system of representing numbers characterized by a series of digits, each of which has only two possible states, one (1) or zero (0). See also bit, decimal notation, and hexadecimal notation. |
