Berners-Lee, Sir Timothy (“Tim”) John (1955–) The inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW, aka the Web). Berners-Lee was employed at CERN (l’Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire), the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland, when he developed the WWW in 1989 as a collaborative tool for high-energy physicists. He currently is a director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees ongoing Web development. See also W3C and WWW. |
