单词 | x |
释义 | x 1. In mathematics, the symbol for an unknown quantity, person, factor, or thing. X is the first in a set of two or three unknowns comprising x, y, and z. In telecommunications, for example, xDSL refers to any of a group of Digital Subscriber Line services. See also x-axis, xDSL, y, and z. 2. In mathematics, times. For example, 3 × 4 = 12 means 3 times 4 equals 12. 3. In measurements, by. For example, a 2 × 4 (2 by 4) is a piece of lumber measuring 2 inches wide by 4 inches deep, or at least it used to be. A contemporary 2 × 4 actually measures 11⁄2˝ by 31⁄2˝ (38 by 89 mm), with the difference being due to planing (i.e., shaping) and shrinking as the lumber is dried. Once upon a time, lumber was cut so that a 2 × 4 was actually 2˝ by 4˝ after planing and shrinking. Once upon a time a lot of things were different. In olden times, a can of coffee (yes, people actually used to buy ground coffee in cans) actually weighed one pound, comprising 16 ounces. Contemporary cans of coffee variously weigh 12 oz., 12.5 oz, or perhaps 14 oz., but rarely 16 oz. The reason, of course, is marketing, which translates into perceptual selling, which at the very least borders on deceptive selling. Many marketers would rather reduce the size of the product while holding the price firm rather than holding the size of the product firm while increasing the price. Ultimately, it is a matter of ethics. See also ethics. |
