watt (W) Watt is the fundamental unit of electrical power, and is a rate unit, rather than a quantity. The wattage is determined by multiplying the voltage (E), as measured in volts (V), by the current (I), as measured in amperes (A). (W = V × A). A watt is the amount of power required to do work at the rate of one joule per second. The watt is named for James Watt (1736–1819), who invented the steam engine and, in collaboration with Matthew Boulton, also invented a pumping engine and a rotative engine.
