transceiver (transmitter/receiv er) A device that serves as both a transmitter and receiver, with both sets of circuitry contained within a common housing. In a local area network (LAN) context, a media access unit (MAU) is a form of transceiver that serves to physically connect a device such as a workstation or printer to the network.
