单词 | spam |
释义 | spam Unsolicited e-mail, or junk mail. The term refers to Hormel’s ever-popular canned meat product made of processed pork and ham. The analogy supposedly is that junk e-mail is broadcast all over, just as the Hormel meat product spatters when hurled against a solid object with sufficient force. No one likes spam, the junk mail. Lots of people, on the other hand, love SPAM®, the lunch meat. SPAM was introduced in 1937 as the Miracle Meat. The name, an initialism of SPiced hAM, was submitted in a contest, with the winner receiving the sum of US$100.00. SPAM became a staple during WWII (World War II), both in the military and at home, at least partially because it required no refrigeration and was not rationed. There is even a SPAM Web site, fan club, gift catalog, museum, and three (count ’em, 3) promotional SPAMMOBILEs™ that tour the United States, making stops at grocery stores, festivals, sporting events, and other venues. Fried SPAM is an essential dish in any local food menu in the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), where it gained popularity as a result of the U.S. military presence. The junk mail type of spam is outlawed in the United States under the federal CAN-SPAM Act.There are no federal, state, or local laws against SPAM, the canned lunch meat. See also CAN-SPAM Act, e-mail, and SPIM. |
