单词 | Postel, Jon (1943–1998) |
释义 | Postel, Jon (1943–1998) A significant contributor in the area of standards during the development of the Internet, Postel was the Editor of the Request for Comments ( RFC) document series. Postel also served as the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) until his death, at which time IANA management transferred to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Postel is particularly well known for the Robustness Principle, also known as Postel’s Law, which he stated in RFC 793 (1981) and again in RFC 1122 (1989), Requirements for Internet Hosts – Communications Layers. The Robustness Principle states, “Be liberal in what you accept, and conservative in what you send,” which essentially advises the Internet community to design host software in such a way as to (1) be prepared for malevolent incoming packets and (2) be prepared for deficiencies on other hosts that can make it unwise to exploit legal but obscure protocol features that can cause disruption if the other hosts misbehave.
