media specification for 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GbE) transmission over single-mode fiber (SMF) with a core diameter of 8.3µ, 9µ, or 10µ; using a wavelength of 1550 nm; and a maximum distance of 40 kilometers.

The letter R indicates that 64B/66B signal encoding is used.The W refers to the WAN Interface Sublayer (WIS) that enables compatibility between 10GbE equipment and SONET long haul equipment in a
