PAP (Password Authentication Protocol) A commonly used mechanism for password protection in support of remote users attempting to log on to a Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) server. While PAP is easy to use, passwords typically are sent to the remote access server (RAS) in plain text (i.e., in the clear, or unencrypted). PAP demands the user’s login name and password, and continues to do so until they both are supplied correctly. A hacker who knows the login name can use password-guessing programs to keep trying, in hopes that he can hit on the right combination and gain access.
