modal bandwidth The measure of the capacity of a multimode fiber (MMF) in Gbps applications, modal bandwidth is expressed in MHz/km. A MMF with a higher modal bandwidth will support data transmission at a given rate over a longer distance. Modal bandwidth is determined by the dispersion characteristics of the fiber, including both modal dispersion and chromatic dispersion.
