HFC (Hybrid Fiber/Coax) Referring to transmission facilities that comprise both optical fiber and coaxial cable. HFC generally refers to a CATV local loop of optical fiber from the provider’s headend to a neighborhood node that acts as a media converter between the optical fiber and the embedded coax that runs to the customer premises. The corresponding terms in the telephone networks are fiber-to-the-neighborhood (FTTN) and fiber-to-the-node (FTTN), where the final link to the premises is unshielded twisted pair (UTP).
