释义 | Hertz, Heinrich Rudolf (1857–1894) The physicist who was the first to demonstrate the existence of electromagnetic radiation by constructing an apparatus that produced radio waves, Heinrich Rudolf Hertz proved that electromagnetic energy can transverse free space, can penetrate various materials, and is reflected by other materials. His experiments further explained reflection, refraction, the velocity of light, and other electromagnetic phenomena. In his honor, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) established the Hertz (Hz) as the SI unit of measurement for frequency, which prior to 1930 was expressed as cycles per second (cps). |
