单词 gTLD (generic Top Level Domain)
释义

gTLD (generic Top Level Domain)

In the Internet Domain Name System (DNS), the rightmost

portion of the address — the domain — identifies the type of entity owning or sponsoring the address.

The several types of Top Level Domains (TLDs) include generic Top Level Domains (gTLDs) and country codes (ccTLDs). If a country code is used in the address, the gTLD becomes a secondary domain. The original gTLDs are unsponsored, meaning that they operate under policies established by the global Internet community, directly through the administration process of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).The original gTLDs and their intended use are as follows:

.arpa: Address Routing and Parameter Area, exclusively for Internet infrastructure purposes

.com: commercial organizations

.edu: accredited degree-granting educational institutions

.gov: United States government agencies

.int: organizations formed under international treaties between governments

.mil: United States military

.net: network access providers, originally; now unrestricted

.org: noncommercial organizations, originally; now unrestricted

Another seven TLDs became active in 2002,and another four in 2005.The majority of these gTLDs are unsponsored, although some have a sponsor that represents the narrower community that is most affected.

The new gTLDs and their intended uses are as follows:

.aero: aeronautical interests (2002), sponsored by Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques (SITA)

.biz: biznesses (2002), unsponsored

.cat: Catalan linguistic and cultural community (2005), sponsored by Fundació puntCat.

.coop: cooperative associations (2002), sponsored by Dot Cooperation LLC

.info: informational sites, unrestricted (2002), unsponsored
