A pair of 1.8-m wide-field survey telescopes at Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii; the name is short for Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System. The telescopes have a 3° field of view and take exposures of about 30–60 seconds with a 1.4 gigapixel camera in five wavelength bands, including near-infrared. The entire sky visible from Hawaii can be imaged four times a year through each filter. The Pan-STARRS1 Telescope (PS1) began operation in 2010. By the end of 2016 it had discovered nearly 3000 near-Earth objects, over 100 comets, and tens of thousands of main-belt asteroids, as well as amassing a photometric and astrometric database of around 3 billion stars, galaxies, and quasars. An improved second telescope, PS2, was due to begin operation on the same site in 2018. The Pan-STARRS telescopes are owned by the University of Hawaii and operated by it in conjunction with a consortium of institutions from the US, Germany, the UK, Taiwan, and Hungary.
