单词 pandemic
释义
pandemic

Biology
  • An epidemic that spreads worldwide. For example, a variant of the influenza A virus, H1N1, emerged in North America in 2009 and quickly spread to affect over 200 countries around the globe by August 2010. There was a low level of immunity among the human population, flu vaccines were ineffective, and up to 200 000 people are thought to have died.

Geography
  • An epidemic over a large area; throughout an entire country, continent, or the whole world. See Chandra et al. (2013) Int. J. Health Geographics 12, 9 on the Indian influenza pandemic of 1918–19, where over 15 million died in less than a year.
