A group of primitive fish (Actinopterygii), most of which were of modest size (about the size of a herring), but possessed thick, rhomboidal, enamel scales. There is great variety in structural detail and they were most abundant in the Carboniferous. The group diminished rapidly after the early Triassic and finally became extinct in the Cretaceous.
