The study of the relationships of fossil organisms to each other and to their environments. It involves the study both of the fossils and of the surrounding rocks in which they are found. Trace fossils may provide information on the behaviour of the organism.
Geology and Earth Sciences
The application of ecological concepts to fossil and sedimentary evidence in order to study the interactions of the Earth’s surface, atmosphere, and biosphere in pre-historic and geologic times.
Geography
The reconstruction of past environments from fossils evidence. See Seppä and Bennett (2003) PPG 27, 4 on progress in palaeoecology, and Meadows (1999) PPG 23, 2.
