Member of a Venetian family important in the Middle Ages, and doge of Venice. He established military and naval power by personally directing the Fourth Crusade to attack Dalmatia and sack Constantinople. Under him, Venice was victorious against Pisa, secured important treaties with Armenia and the Holy Roman Empire, and reformed its laws.
