A coordinate system for 3-dimensional space which is a useful alternative to Cartesian coordinates when describing a problem with a line of symmetry. With the z-axis as that line of symmetry, cylindrical polar coordinates are related to Cartesian coordinates by

A technique for giving three-dimensional coordinates (r,ϕ,z) of a point. Radial distance r is the distance of the point from the vertical z-axis, azimuth angle ϕ specifies a rotation from the x-axis, and height z gives the distance to move parallel to the z-axis to reach the point.
