An instrument that produces a visible image of one or more rapidly varying electrical quantities. An image can be produced showing the variation of a signal with respect to time or with respect to another electrical quantity. The most usual type of oscilloscope is the cathode-ray oscilloscope.

An oscilloscope provided with the means to produce a permanent record of the signal on film or magnetically sensitive paper is known as an oscillograph; the record thus produced is an oscillogram.
