An obsolete concept, linked to geosynclinal theory, that several sequential phases were involved in the formation of an orogenic belt. Many authors produced variations, but most cycles began with a geosynclinal phase (mainly subsidence and sedimentation), followed by an orogenic phase (mainly compression), and ended with a post-orogenic phase (mainly uplift).
