The most common type of asteroid in the outer main asteroid belt. C-type asteroids have low albedos (0.03–0.08) and flat reflectance spectra at wavelengths longer than 0.4 μm. The ‘C’ is for carbonaceous, since they are believed to have surfaces that are similar in composition to carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Their spectra show an ultraviolet absorption feature at wavelengths shorter than 0.4 μm, thought to be due to water of hydration. Examples include Hygiea and Davida. Types B, F, and G are subdivisions of C type.
