A great ape (family Hominidae) that has very long, strong arms, short legs, and a reddish-brown coat. It is more solitary than other apes, highly arboreal, and extremely intelligent, making and using tools to obtain food, using leaves as umbrellas to shelter from heavy rain, and each night constructing an elaborate nest for sleeping. There are three species, the Bornean (Pongo pygmaeus) and Sumatran (P. abelii) orang-utans, found only in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra; and the Pongo tapanuliensis in Tapanuli, North Sumatra, identified in 2013.
