A migratory, ground-nesting, grassland bird (family Rallidae), about 30 cm long with a wingspan of about 50 cm, predominantly brown-flecked with black, and with a grating krek krek male mating call that gives the bird its name. It breeds throughout temperate Eurasia, although it is now absent from much of its original range, and winters mainly in Africa.
