The title taken by Mutota, founder of the Rozvi empire in East Africa. It has been translated as “master pillager” and as “lord of the conquered mines”. The Portuguese corrupted it to Monomotapa, and used it as a name for the empire. The founder died c.1470, and was succeeded until 1480 by his son Matope, a great conqueror who took possession of the greater part of eastern Central Africa. On his death his son Changa seized most of the empire from the designated heir, proclaiming himself Changamire. The dynasty lasted until the end of the 18th century.
