A type of positive displacement pump that consists of a rotating helical worm contained within a casing or stator. A self-priming pump, it is particularly suitable for fluids with high viscosities and solid content such as wastewater, sludge, and slurries. It is widely used in the chemical, oil, and gas industries, as well as food, paper, mining, and mineral processing industries. It can produce high-delivery heads such that pressure relief valves are required on the delivery line. They were first developed by Mono in 1935.
