A constellation on the celestial equator, representing a unicorn. It contains the massive binary Plaskett’s Star. Its brightest star is Alpha Monocerotis, magnitude 3.9. Beta Monocerotis is a superb triple star, magnitudes 4.6, 5.4, and 5.6. M50 and NGC 2232 are open clusters. NGC 2244 is a star cluster within the Rosette Nebula. NGC 2261 is Hubble’s Variable Nebula. NGC 2264 is a star cluster associated with the Cone Nebula, including the highly luminous star S Monocerotis, magnitude 4.7 but slightly variable.
