Vitoria studied in Paris and gained his chair in 1526. His writings cover a variety of topics, but he is remembered mainly for discussions of the nature of political society, authority, and ownership, with particular reference to the newly-discovered Spanish domains in South America. He has been honoured by Dutch scholars as an influential predecessor of Grotius, and hence a founder of international law.
