A salt that is solid at s.t.p. but is liquid when heated. There are many practical applications of molten salts. An example is the molten salt battery; molten salts conduct electricity well, as they consist of mobile ions. The mobility of ions in molten salts also means that electrolysis can be applied to them. In the case of molten sodium chloride, for example, sodium is produced at the cathode and chlorine is produced at the anode.
