A purpose-built VLBI array of ten identical radio telescopes spread across the USA with a maximum baseline of 8600 km, giving a resolution better than 0″.001 at its shortest operating wavelength, 3.5 mm. Eight of the 25-m telescopes are in the continental USA, with the other two on Hawaii and the Virgin Islands. The VLBA was completed in 1993 and shares headquarters in Socorro, New Mexico, with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. It is operated by the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
