The theory and practice of refusing to eat the meat of dead animals; sometimes taken to include refusing to use (exploit) other remains of animals, e.g. by wearing leather. More radical stances include that of vegans, who refuse to use the produce of live animals, such as eggs and milk. Vegetarianism may be a consequence of revulsion at contemporary farming practices, or of concern at wasteful use of the world’s resources, or it may be simply a matter of principle that it is wrong to take animal life.
