King of Pontus (120–63). His expansionist policies led to a war with Rome (88–85), during which he occupied most of Asia Minor and much of Greece, until driven back by Sulla. Two further wars followed (83–82; 74–66); he was defeated by the Roman general Lucullus (c.110–c.57) and finally by Pompey.
